License to Wed: How did they get the license?
When it comes to romantic comedies, weddings seem to ring the right bell. There have been so many of them centered on weddings. We have My Best Friend’s Wedding, Saving Silverman, The Wedding Planner…I could keep going on and on. Maybe there is something funny about marriage itself, otherwise why would so many people waste so much money-some making it and some watching it? With my mind buzzing with nonsensical questions like this, I went to watch License to Wed. And you know the conclusion that I came to? Because sometimes, we people are just suckers who are reeled in with the prospect of watching a rib tickling romantic comedy with a lot of “awww!” moments. I guess you are listening to one such sucker right now.

Josh Flitter, John Krasinski, Robin Williams in License to Wed
The movie is about a young guy named Ben Murphy (John Krasinski) who is just about the luckiest man on this planet. You see, he finally proposed to the girl of his dreams- Sadie Jones (Mandy Moore) and she said yes! So they are dreaming about this perfect life, but there is someone who pops their dream bubble and this is none other than the head cleric at Sadie’s family church- Reverend Frank (Robin Williams). He tells them that he will marry them only and only if they pass couple of simple tests that he has ready for them. Lost in love, they agree to what he asks. After all, he is a man of the cloth right? But what this reverend has planned is right out of crazy land. As the poor couple go through one test after the other, their patience and endurance takes a beating to the point where they are not sure about this holy union. But since it is a romantic comedy, you obviously know what to expect in the end right?

John Krasinski, Mandy Moore in License to Wed
Talking about performances, well, Robin Williams is his usual charming and jovial self and commands admiration. Though no fleshed out properly, he manages to pull the role off quite nicely. When ever he is sharing screen space with another actor, the latter is bound to go unnoticed. As for the rest of the cast, well, there is not much to say. The lead pair of John Krasinski and Mandy Moore is the result of some very bad casting as the two have absolutely zero chemistry between them. Even individually, they fail miserably and are best not paid much attention to.

The director Ken Kwapis is not a stranger to this genre as he has made movies like The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (hilarious!) and The Beautician and the Beast. So it comes as a disappointment when he is behind this loosely held film. He has tried to give maximum leverage to the undoubted crowd puller in this flick-Robin Williams, but come on, how much of that can you do?
According to me, this is not one of the better choices to make when you want to watch a romantic comedy because there is practically no romance in it. Best you wait till they show it on TV. I’m sure it will be there soon.
