Evan Almighty: God Almighty!
This is really unfair. If god is honestly just materializing in front of people and giving them the opportunity to become him, I want in! How come this does not happen to normal people?! Yes, you might think this is the hysterical outburst of a small child, but truly, when you see films like this don’t you just want to scream? I thought Bruce Almighty was a mistake that Jim Carrey made. Of course, he made the mistake more watch able, but it was mistake nonetheless. Just when I had thought that was behind me, here comes Evan Almighty - the sequel! Tom Shadyak sure does not believe in learning from mistakes otherwise he would never make this film.

Steve Carell and Morgan Freeman in Evan Almighty
In this sequel, we see Steve Carell (remember him from Bruce Almighty?) once again as Evan Baxter. You see, Baxter has switched lines since the last film and he wins a seat in the congress. All happy, he and his family is all set to move into a mini mansion in Washington D.C. just as he starts to get in the groove of things, Morgan Freeman appears in front of him as god and warns him about a flood that will destroy his family and everything around it in the near future. He urges him to step into Noah’s shoes (read the Bible!) and build an arc to stop the flood. Soon he gets Evan to do what he says (he is god, remember?) and despite the protests of everyone around him, he gets down to building that arc. Though everyone still thinks he is a little crazy, they start pitching in to help him. The villain, Congressman Long (John Goodman) tries to tell people that Evan is crazy and for the sake of society, he should be stopped. You see, he ahs his own secret agenda. So through everything, Evan realizes the importance of doing the right thing-no matter how hard it is or how alone you are. He also comes to appreciate the unconditional love that a family has. A happy, mushy ending sees everyone satisfied.

Lauren Graham in Evan Almighty
Please oh please tell me you see the gaping holes that I see! Since when does an anchorman get a congressional ticket? And does god have a contract with people working in the same organization? It is unbelievable. And Noah? That’s a little too much for me to digest. If I were Baxter, I would run, not sit around building an arc.
The acting is lack luster and the vitality that Carrey lent to the film (its only major plus) was missing. The rest of the cast in forgettable and even Carell is only strictly ok. Its like being a one eyed prince in a blind kingdom.

Graham Phillips, Steve Carell, Johnny Simmons, Jimmy Bennett, Lauren Graham in Evan Almighty
The direction, well, what do I say now. The continuity is dropped at several places and the storyline is skewed. I think he director is disillusioned that Bruce Almighty was a major hit and hence the sequel. But I think someone forgot to mention it to him that things are not quite like that.

Steve Carell in Evan Almighty
All I can hope for is that they stop and don’t come up with another follow up. Then even god is going to come down and tell them to cut it out.
