No Country for Old Men

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

No-Country-for-Old-MenNo Country for Old Men is directed by the hugely talented duo,the Coen brothers and based on the book of the same name by author Cormac McCarthy. It is a chilling and disturbing tale that uses raw performances by its lead actors to bring action and drama to the fore. The story begins with Llewelyn Moss, Josh Brolin finding a pickup truck filled with heroin and cash and twenty dead men around it. (more…)

Rush Hour 3: Why The Rush?

Sunday, December 16th, 2007

Rush Hour 3The first Rush Hour flick was entertaining; I’ll give you that. The second got on your nerves a little, but then again, the first was a hit so there was no avoiding that. But when the third installment of the movie came out, I braced myself before entering the movie hall. You see, I feared that I would be subjected to mindless antics of tired stars who were doing the entire thing on a lark and the whole purpose of the movie is to rake in the moolah on the strength of the popularity of the predecessors. How I wish that I could say I was being simply paranoid and prejudiced and that the film is not quite bad! Sadly, I was right bang on and I could not wait to get out of the theatre. (more…)

American Gangster

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

Carla Gugino in American GangsterAmerican Gangster is reminiscent of many mafia movies like Serpico and The Godfather. It is based on the true story of Frank Lucas, played by Denzel Washington who was a drug lord in New York during the 1970s. The movie is quite engrossing and well made but somehow stops short of being a great film in spite of excellent performances by Russell Crowe as Richie Roberts, as the honest cop out to bust the drug lord and by Denzel Washington. Ocean’s Thirteen: Lucky Number Thirteen

Thursday, September 6th, 2007

Al Pacino in Ocean’s ThirteenBet director Steven Soderbergh was counting on this play of fate to make his third in the Ocean series - Ocean’s 13, a runaway hit. Can’t really blame the guy - third movies almost always run out of steam unless its like Star Wars or The Trilogy of The Lord of the Rings; but then again, that’s a totally different league all together. Anyway, coming back to Ocean’s 13, it has two great predecessors. Ocean’s 11 was mind blowing, we all know that. The sequel was a little off the bull’s eye, but nevertheless, it made enough money for there to be a third part. (more…)

Captivity

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

CaptivityWhen a new Roland Joffé movie was up for release, I wanted in because this was the guy who made great cult champions like The Killing Fields and The Mission. I knew that there would be no danger in watching this as I know the kind of movies he makes and so was secure. Little did I know that it was all a trap! A trap well laid to get me into the theatre and into the seat. I didn’t know why they did it, but they sure had me fooled. I was held captive in the cinema hall and was tortured with this “movie”. Ironically, it is also titled Captivity. (more…)

Die Hard 4 Movie Review: Very hard indeed

Monday, July 16th, 2007

Bruce Willis in Die Hard 4.0Just the other day I was thinking that there are really no great Hollywood flicks out this season. Maybe they are taking a sabbatical from making good movies or something of that sort. Anyway, there is one thing that I have not been able to get out of my mind. That is the release of the ultra cool and most eagerly awaited movie - Die Hard 4.0. Oh yeah, the way everyone around me has been going on about it, you’d think that this is even better than the Potter series. (I bet some people even fantasize about this…). So, even though I’ve had my share of action movies, I too stood in the line to get my ticket for this movie and settled down for a nice nostalgic ride. (more…)
