10,000 BC: Flying terror birds, stampeding mammoths and the blue-eyed legend!

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

(Stills) The animal in man is like a primitive being that just waits to break free and take him into the deep dark dense jungles of a bygone epoch where the ruling spirit was survival of the fittest. Even it holds true today though the meaning of fitness has changed a lot for us, we still love the prehistoric fight for survival, the extinct animals, the intriguing myths and the illustrative legends. This is the very fact exploited by Roland Emmerich in 10,000 BC, a sure shot Apocalyptic success. Roland Emmerich agrees that he was influenced by One Million Years B.C. and Apocalypto but gives the credit to Robert E. Howard for his fictional work that inspired him to take us back to a harsh and primeval prehistoric age in quest of truth and courage. Making use of rampant digital imagery to recreate a beyond belief lost era of wilderness depicted in and out. (more…)

Beowulf

Thursday, December 13th, 2007

BeowulfBeowulf and Grendel is a touching story of vengeance, mercy and helplessness in the conflict between Norsemen and Christianity. It is based on the poem of the same name written between the seventh and eleventh centuries. The film scores in depicting the dark story against the craggy mountainous backdrop of Iceland. It also includes a chilling portrayal of death as a bone white creature of the sea, with dangerous claw like digits that grab the victim out of the blue. (more…)

The Bourne Ultimatum

Monday, November 19th, 2007

Matt Damon, Julia Stiles in The Bourne UltimatumOh yes. I am talking about the film- The Bourne Ultimatum. The third in the Bourne trilogy, I was a little skeptical about it from the start. Right up till the time that the commercials were on and I was munching popcorn in the darkened theatre, I had my doubts about this last one measuring up to the previous two. You see, most successful films have bad sequels and this after all, is the third part. I figured that since you can’t even play around too much with amnesia, how on earth would one make it look fresh for the third time? (more…)

Stardust: The stars shine down

Monday, September 17th, 2007

Michelle Pfeiffer in StardustWhen a trend has begun, there is no stopping the followers. Fads, though short lived, almost possess people into doing what is “in”. Right now, I suppose the trend points towards a magical bend of the directors and script writer’s wrist. You see, the public is bored of our own mundane, bad world and want to enter another realm which takes them deep into the world of fantasies and enthralls them, if only for an hour or two. Take the Harry Potter series, or Lord of the Rings for example sake. And now, we have another one jump onto the band wagon. This is Stardust. (more…)

Sunshine: A Bright Future

Sunday, August 12th, 2007

Cillian Murphy in SunshineThat is exactly what we WON’T be having, according to the makers of Sunshine. Imagine how the world will be 50 years from now. Much the same? Well, how about a century from now? Have not given it much thought. Mostly, the human race might not be there. Or maybe we will be like The Jetsons. This thought has fueled the imagination of countless film makers and one thing they all seem to agree upon is that it’s not getting much better. Films like The Matrix tell us how the machines are going to make us their slaves. Movies like Minority Report tell us that the world will become more of a global village. Then there are movies like Sunshine which tell us that we will be frozen to death. (more…)

Ratatouille: Come and Get It!

Saturday, August 11th, 2007

RatatouilleOh yes! There is nothing better than something really tasty to eat and something really great to watch. The combination of the appeasement of these two senses is of vital importance to me and once the two are satiated, I’m one happy person. Some films are so great that they make you forget what is happening in your world because they pull you into theirs. (more…)

Transformers: Totally Transformed

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

Megan Fox in TransformersI always wondered about the comic and cartoon characters I know from my childhood. What if they were to become human? Ok, fine, I’ll settle for something more realistic. What if they were given human forms by some great film maker? Would that not be super? Well, no. Till now, The Flintstones did not work for me; Fantastic Four are not that fantastic anymore and Superman, well, let’s not go there. The point is, by doing something like this, you ruin someone’s imagination and anyone who tries it better makes something good, or face the wrath of many fans. (more…)
