Life in a… Metro Movie Review

“This city takes back a lot more than what it gives you…” this line is said by Irrfan Khan in the movie and this is what has struck me as one of the most powerful dialogues in this film. The movie talks about 4 couples and the various trials and tribulations that the great city of Mumbai forces them through for only one thing- survival.

Shilpa Shetty and Shiny Ahuja in Life in a… Metro

The movie starts off with Ranjeet (Kay Kay) and Shikha (Shilpa Shetty) who have a small child of their own but that’s all they share anymore. Then there is Rahul (Sharman Joshi) who wants to make it big at all costs and for that gives his uncle’s apartment out to influential superiors to have fun with their girlfriends. He loves Neha (Kangana Raut), but she too is ambitious like him and while he uses his uncle’s apartment, she uses her body. She has an affair with their boss, who is Ranjeet.

While hubby is out having his fun, Shikha also meets someone who makes her happy. This is Akash (Shiney Ahuja) – a struggling actor. Shikha has a sister- Shruti (Konkona Sen Sharma), who is unable to land the perfect man through matrimonial sites. She meets Debu (Irfaan Khan) through one of the sites and finds him cheap and incorrigible. But as fate would have it, they keep running into each other very often. Oh, and she is also Neha’s roommate. Then there is also Shikha’s dance teacher Vaijanti (Nafisa Ali) who is a widow in an old age home. Her old flame Amol (Dharmendra) resurfaces and shows her a better way to live.

Whew! That’s quite a lot to show in the span of two and a half hours. But Anuraag Basu manages to do so with aplomb. The direction is almost impeccable and kudos to the team for pulling such a tough one off. Talking about the acting, everyone has done a wonderful job. All the characters have performed to the best of their abilities and are believable and real. Special mention must be made of Irfaan Khan, Konkona Sen Sharma and Kay Kay for their contribution.

Not only are the actors great, but the storyline has also been handled in a very mature manner and does not let the viewer loose interest, which is remarkable. The music provided by Pritam is very fitting.

Now come the flaws: there are not many, but the use of Pritam and his band at the slightest opportunity can get quite irritating. Just when you empathize with the character on screen, phut! There come the three men clad in black. Though an innovative concept, it is overused.

Instead, the director should have used some more time to cultivate some of the characters like that of Dharmendra and Nafisa Ali, Shiney Ahuja and the relationship between Sharman Joshi and Kangana Raut. The above mentioned have a lot of potential and their roles would have been completely mind blowing if fleshed out a wee bit more.

But all considered, definitely worth a watch - after all, the movie is talking about our lives.

whoeverz seen this movie…has appreciated it. i enjoyed it too. BUT …one grouse. what the heck was that shilpa shetty taking kk back all about???? its not as if he had seen the …”folly” of his ways…………….he was on his way to yet another dalliance when ranaut walked off…leaving him to get thrashed over some traffic altercation.
so..again…what the heck was that about???? regressive…i tell u… what were his reasons for coming back??? tlc after a public pitaai?? is that self confessed capable women are supposed to be doing?? taking back inconsiderate hypocritical (remember kk getting all weird when she told him she liked someone but hadnt been to bed with him??) UNREFORMED men??? most unconvincng…
