Nandita Das at launch of Fragmented Frames book by Bhawana Somaaya
Nandita Das, Gulzar, Dolly Thakore and others were at the book release - Fragmented Frames, by Bhavna Somaaya in IMC on May 9th 2008. Noted film journalist Bhawana Somaaya said that writing on cinema, once referred to as “yellow journalism” confined to the glossies, has transformed to a serious and respectable profession. “It has even infiltrated into the front-page territory. My new book `Fragmented Frames` is a celebration of this change in perspective,” Somaaya said at the box release function of `Fragmented Frames` at the Indian Merchants Chamber (IMC) here.
Noted lyricist Gulzar and actress Nandita Das were present at the function. She said the splendour of cinema is all around and it is no longer possible to escape its connecting media. Unlike 100 years ago, when nobody respectable wanted to be part of the film world, today, everybody, everywhere is obsessed with movies, Hindi films in particular, she added. Somaaya said over the decades many significant moments in cinema have been captured into books. “But many precious moments surrounding them have been lost because we did not see to recognise the relevance of those moments or may be did not lend them sufficient importance.
This book is an effort to record those precious moments gone by. At times subjective, at times reflecting on the larger issues, the book is a documentation of dramatic times, a salute to the fascinating medium of moving images, she said. Gulzar also released a compilation of his selected poems on the occasion.
