Sir Richard Charles Nicholas Branson launches Virgin Mobile in India

Sir Richard Charles Nicholas Branson, probably Britain’s best known Entrepreneur, launches Virgin Mobile in India. He is sometimes abbreviated as SRB for “Sir Richard Branson” is an English entrepreneur, best known for his Virgin brand, a banner that encompasses a variety of business organizations. The name Virgin was chosen because a female friend involved in setting down the initial record shop commented that there weren’t any virgins left amongst them. It is estimated that Branson is worth over £3,065 million according to the Sunday Times Rich List 2006.

On Sunday, Sir Richard’s Virgin Group unveiled a partnership with Tata Indicom, under which the Indian company will market a mobile service aimed at young consumers using the Virgin brand.

A powerful industry group, which includes Vodafone, the world’s largest mobile operator, has now demanded that the Indian Government declare the deal void. The Cellular Operators Association of India claims Virgin is entering the market via the backdoor as an illegal “mobile virtual network operator” (MVNO), where it effectively buys mobile capacity wholesale from Tata and sells it on under its own brand - a model not permitted in India.
