Darling: Is this what this is supposed to be?

Esha Deol in DarlingSo finally Ram Gopal Verma has a lot happening on Fridays. He will be seeing back to back releases with his Ram Gopal Verma Ki Aag and Darling. There is absolutely no need for me to once again document the fate of the former in the eyes of the public. Supposedly an ode, or rather a remake, of the cult classic Sholay, this one has everything going wrong for it. Poor Ramu had to stand up to the cruel tongues of media critics and the public likewise. For his sake, I hope Darling gets a far better response. But let’s just do a quick check to see if it’s worth a watch or no.

Going over the story, we have Aditya (Fardeen Khan) who has everything that all men crave for. No, no. it’s not the latest sports bike. It is, in fact, the best of both worlds. Better put, he is one of those lucky guys who has the perfect wife at home and the perfect mistress at hand. Ashvini (Ishaa Kopikar) is the ideal wife who cooks, cleans and takes care of his kid. But men always crave for a little adventure outside wedlock and Aditya finds it in Gita’s (Esha Deol) arms- a spitfire and wildcat girlfriend and mistress. Easily, he manages to con both women. He does this by carefully and cleverly hiding the existence of the latter from the former and with the mistress, he plays the age old game of “of course I’ll leave her for you…”. Needless to say, both women are fooled by his charm.

So everything seems hunky dory in Aditya’s life until one fine day Gita breaks the catastrophic news of her pregnancy to Aditya. On hearing this he panics and decides that it is time to tell her that he has been stringing her along. Too bad for him that she does not take this news calmly and in a crazy fight, manages to end up dead. Totally scared and nervous, Aditya disposes off the body and returns home, a nervous wreck, but in one piece. He starts thinking that the worst is over and prepares to return to a monogamous life when Gita comes back in the form of his worst nightmare. She is haunting him and will not leave without what is her due.

Reminiscent of Raaz, this RGV flick has a strong storyline that has been tried and tested in the past. But this of course, will have a couple of changes. Nevertheless, the comparison is inevitable. Still, I feel that the actors have done quite a good job with this one. Though there is not much for her to do, Ishaa is consistent. Esha Deol is amazing as the scorned lover and this is a dream role for the dream girl’s daughter.

RGV himself has given a lot of character to the film and it is terribly spooky at times. I really don’t blame Esha Deol for refusing to be part of the Tamil remake of the movie.

All in all, worth a watch, especially if you thrive on chills.
