Written and directed by one of India’s most acclaimed directors Ketan Mehta, Rang Rasiya is based on a classic Indian novel ‘Raja Ravi Varma’ written by the highly acclaimed, award winning and popular Marathi novelist and playwright ‘Ranjit Desai’. The novel is woven around the life and times of the great Indian painter of the 19th century, ‘Raja Ravi Varma’ and deals with religious intolerance and denial of freedom of expression by fundamentalists and hardliners -sadly a fact and truth of even present times. When two different worlds fuse to form one thing, there are two scenarios- the first being that it is a superhero a la Superman himself, or maybe Spiderman. In that case, it is only so much you can do as marvel about the wonders of nature and wish secretly that your superhero saves you one day or better still, your fortunes too take a turn like his. The second scenario is not as pretty- what you get is an ugly mutant that destroys everything and one that you can’t stand to look at.
