Gauri - The Unborn: Inappropriate Supernatural Element
Is it a horror movie? I doubt. After watching Gauri the Unborn, you will raise the same question. The message that Aku Akbar wants to convey through this movie is anti-abortion. Why couldn’t he get away with the message without adding an immature horror plot in it? By stuffing a socially sensitive issue with an inappropriate supernatural element, the director has spoiled the entire purpose of the movie.

It seems that Gauri was made with a positive intention to educate people about the evils of abortion. However, due to the immaturity of the plot and the faltering circumstances that come up in the movie, the director turns the sensitive issue a total mess. The result- neither you will call it as a horror movie, nor will you term it as a ’socially relevant movie’.

Atul Kulkarni, Rituparna Sengupta in Gauri - The Unborn
Sudeep (Atul Kulkarni) and Roshni (Rituparna Sengupta) are leading their life as a normal couple. They have got a daughter Shivani (Rushita Pandya). One day destiny comes to their family in the form of a ghost and it enters the soul of Shivani. The ghost is none other than the child that Roshni had conceived when they were in the initial periods of their marital life. The ghost, the Didi of Roshni, wants to take revenge on her parents who aborted her. The remaining part of the movie is all about how the ghost takes over the family members and how they escape from it.
The role played by Anupam Kher as the father of Atul is impressive. At one point when Atul shares his view on aborting his first baby, Anupam explains that he and his wife did not opt for a sibling for Atul because they were not well off to bear one more child; however, they were careful of not committing a mistake by creating an unwanted pregnancy. This message strongly points towards many couples today, for most of the abortions happen due to carelessness of the parents.
Gauri was the name given to the unborn child. The role of the new Gauri as the ghost does not create much impact in the minds of the viewers. Though the movie stills are shot in the dark background, they fail to create any horror effects in them.
Rituparna Sengupta and Atul Kulkarni put forth an average performance as Roshni and Sudeep respectively. The lead role, the ghost, played by Rushita Pandya, however, is impressive. The little girl signals that she can take up more challenges in her life as an actress.
In simple words the movie Gauri the Unborn shows how a sensitive and terrific topic can be converted into a mess through a movie due to lack of proper presentation and the coherence in its scripts. It is a warning signal to the future directors and producers that if they think that they can handle any topic adding the elements that are in trend (in this case horror), it would lead to utter failure. In order to come out successful, they should have a sincere approach to the issue handled by them.
